Autumn Guttering Checklist: Preparing Your Home Before the Rain Sets In
As the leaves start to turn and the temperature drops, autumn brings some of the heaviest rainfall of the year. It is also the season when guttering problems tend to show up, often at the worst possible moment.
A well maintained guttering system quietly protects your home from water damage all year round, but a blocked or damaged one can lead to overflowing gutters, damp walls and even damage to your foundations. Before the autumn downpours properly set in, it is worth taking a bit of time to check everything is ready for the season ahead.

Why Autumn Maintenance Matters
Summer tends to be kind to guttering, but autumn changes things quickly. Falling leaves, twigs and other debris build up fast, and combined with the season’s heavier rainfall, this is when small issues turn into bigger ones.
Common autumn guttering problems include:
- Blockages from leaves, moss and debris
- Overflowing gutters during heavy rain
- Water pooling near foundations
- Damp patches appearing on walls or ceilings
- Sagging or pulling away from the roofline under the weight of debris and water
Catching these early, before winter frost adds another layer of strain, can save you from far more costly repairs later on.
Your Autumn Guttering Checklist
1. Clear Out Leaves and Debris
This is the single most important job on the list. Gutters that are clogged with leaves cannot do their job, and water will simply spill over the sides instead of draining away properly.
- Clear gutters of leaves, moss and debris before the heaviest autumn rain arrives
- Check downpipes are clear too, not just the gutter channels themselves
- Consider gutter guards if you have overhanging trees, as these can significantly reduce how often you need to clear debris
2. Check for Leaks and Joint Issues
Once your gutters are clear, take a look at the joints and seals. These are often where problems first appear.
- Look for drips or damp patches on the wall below joints
- Check that brackets and fixings are still secure
- Reseal or replace any joints that look worn, cracked or loose
3. Look for Sagging or Misaligned Sections
Gutters should have a slight, consistent fall towards the downpipe. If a section has sagged or the fall has changed, water will not drain properly and can pool instead.
- Check for any obvious dips or sagging along the run
- Look out for water sitting in the gutter after rain rather than draining away
- Re-secure or realign brackets where needed
4. Inspect for Cracks, Splits or Corrosion
The material your guttering is made from affects how well it stands up to autumn and winter weather.
- UPVC guttering can crack or become brittle with age, particularly around fixings
- Cast effect guttering should be checked for any surface damage or loose sections
- Steel guttering should be checked for signs of corrosion, especially around joints and brackets
Catching damage now means you can repair or replace individual sections before winter frost makes any existing cracks worse.
5. Check Downpipes and Drainage
A clear gutter is only half the job, the downpipes and underground drainage need to be doing their part too.
- Make sure downpipes are not blocked or disconnected from the gutter above
- Check that water is draining away from the base of the property, not pooling around foundations
- If you have underground drainage, make sure gullies and drains are clear of leaves and silt
6. Trim Back Overhanging Branches
If you have trees near your roofline, a bit of pruning now can save a lot of clearing out later in the season.
- Cut back branches that overhang the roof or gutters
- This reduces the volume of leaves landing directly in your guttering
- It also reduces the risk of branches damaging guttering during autumn storms
When to Consider Replacing Rather Than Repairing
Not every issue can be fixed with a quick repair. If your guttering is showing widespread cracking, persistent leaks at multiple points, or sections that no longer sit securely no matter how many times they are refixed, it may be more cost effective to replace it rather than patch it up year after year.
